How Can I Get my Straight Hair to Hold a Curl

Having naturally curly hair, it can be hard trying to get mine to stay straight, so I feel your pain (in the opposite way)! Here, some celebrity hair stylists share their top tips:

Celebrity stylist Dean Banowetz (who's worked with everyone from Kelly Clarkson to Jennifer Hudson) says, "One of the best ways to really lock in some curl or wave is to set your damp hair on rollers and let it dry and cool in that formation. One of my mom's favorite things to do is a rag curl set. Take an old towel and cut it into strips, take a section of hair and wrap it around the rag just like you would a roller, then tie the ends. Sit under a dryer until it is completely dry then let it cool till it is completely cooled. Take the rags out and you will have great curls that will last a long time. There are several things you can do to maintain your curls. First, allow the curling iron to heat up to its maximum temperature. Take smaller sections than normal because that will help the heat to penetrate the hair better. Before wrapping each section of hair around the curling iron spray it with a heat activated styling spray which will help create and maintain a longer lasting curl. Hold the hair in the curling iron for several seconds. Now, instead of letting the curl fall, wrap it into a pin curl and secure with a clip. This allows the hair to cool and really create the hydrogen bond within your hair shaft. Repeat until the entire head is in pin curls. While the hair is still up spray the entire head with a finishing spray. Take curls down one by one and you will see the beautiful curls you just made. At this point I would leave the curl just as it is. Avoid using heavy texture, shine, or anti-frizz products because they tend to weigh down the hair. Try to touch your hair as little as possible. Lastly, if you hate how your curls lose their life on special nights out, you could always try something different like romantic half-up half-down hairstyle."

Motions celebrity spokesperson Ursula Stephen suggests, "First apply a volumizing spray to wet hair. It acts as a primer and provides lift and volume. Then, spray the entire head with hairspray and divide hair into 1-inch sections. Use a curling iron on each section. Once the iron is removed, coil the curl and pin into place. Do this throughout the whole head and leave the curls pinned for 20 minutes while you apply makeup and finish getting ready. It's important to do this because hair takes shape while it's warm and once hair cools into place the curl will stay all night. Lastly, take out the pins and apply a spritz, such as Motions Light Hold Spritz to the curls for a firm hold."
